San Francisco Bay OneCup, Organic Rainforest Blend, 120 Single Serve Coffees

San Francisco Bay Coffee OneCup for Keurig K-Cup Brewers, Rainforest Blend, 120 Count Rainforest Blend Our certified organic, Rainforest Blend is an artful mix of coffees from Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, and Indonesia that produces a smooth, yet full-bodied taste with lively acidic notes. View larger View larger Do you take your coffee black or green? K-cup brewing systems – so convenient, but so wasteful. All that plastic going into a landfill – over 10 billion cups a year – enough to circle the earth thirteen times. We decided that we had to be more environmentally responsible. So, to begin with, we developed a pod that used 35% less plastic. Then, we began developing biodegradable components. We have been working for years on this – and are 97% there. Currently the OneCup packaging and the coffee are all 100% biodegradable. The lid and the mesh filter, are the only components not biodegradable – and we are working on that! All combined, the OneCup is 97% biodegradable. Now you can enjoy single serve coffees with a better conscience. A truly superior coffee Great coffee has to start with great coffee beans. Now, everyone says this, but it is really true with us. We source only the very best quality Arabica coffee beans, grown high in the mountains and hand-picked for perfect ripeness. We are very, very picky (pardon the pun) – we have the most demanding standards in the business. When we have found the best beans, we then we roast them to perfection – to their fullest flavor point – using our proprietary and top-secret roasting system. Then, we grind them for optimum flavor, just before packaging into our revolutionary OneCup single serve pods. And finally, our stringent Quality Assurance procedures ensure that the coffee you receive is as consistent as it is excellent. One of our criteria for the OneCup was simple – that it had to taste better than the other single-serve pods out there. Our OneCup filter is designed specially to ensure you will experience the maximum flavor extraction from each cup you brew. What about the coffee farmers? To many coffee roasters, green bean procurement means a phone call to a broker in New York. But by going straight to source, we are able find better coffee – while at the same time, changing lives for the better. You see, coffee farming is like betting your life savings on something, without knowing the odds, the outcome, or the payback. If there is a glut, prices will crash, and you could be out of business. There could be a storm at the wrong moment, which knocks all of the flowers off of the trees or buries the farm in mud. Or a fungus could wipe out your trees – and your livelihood – for years to come. Our farmers are like family to us, and we want them to do well. We guarantee our farmers a profit – and a comfortable life. We also help them with improved farming methods, environmentally responsible practices, crop yield increases, and producing better coffee. But suppose we had a great idea for a farmer to try – and it didn’t work out, and hurt his crop? Not good. So, we try our ideas out on our own farms. We have over 3,000 acres from where we try to develop better tasting coffee. We also try other ideas which can lead to increased yields, more natural production methods, and more consistent, higher quality milling and processing methods. Grown for Good Your purchase is touching the lives of, literally, hundreds of thousands of people in the farming communities around the world. Our Grown For Good Programs have built thousands of housing units, and dozens of schools, kitchens, medical / dental facilities, water treatment plants, etc. We have educational programs, hot meal programs, sports and recreational programs, adult education programs, nutrition programs, environmental responsibility programs. And because of all these improvements in education, housing, health, and sanitary conditions, every person, at every farm we work with, enjoys an improved quality of life. View larger Which is the company behind it all? Java Taman Dadar Organic Coffee, Whole Bean, Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC. (5 lb.)

Coffee has been cultivated on the island of Java since the late 1600s; the first Dutch sailing ships carrying coffee back to Europe can be traced back to 1711.These ships would often stop at the port of Mokka in what is now modern-day Yemen and combine the Javanese coffee with the local production, resulting in the famous Mocca-Java blend. Most of the trees in Java at that time were planted in low-lying areas and by the late 1800s, they had become infested with coffee rust, a defoliant disease that thrives at lower altitudes due to the warmer climate. This was extremely detrimental to the quality and volume of coffee coming out of Java for several decades. This forced coffee production up to the highlands, where volcanic soil and higher altitudes laid the groundwork for a much better crop. Taman Dadar means “flower garden” which is the name the local farmers give to their area. This coffee comes from smallholder farmers in the villages of Curah Tatal and Kayumas on the Ijen Plateau in eastern Java. After employing organic farming techniques for generations, the farmers obtained organic certification enabling them to receive a premium for their production of this excellent coffee. Location Curah Tatal and Kayumas, Java Indonesia Altitude 2900 – 5200 Feet (884 – 1585) Meters Process Wet Hulled Drying Sun Dried on Bamboo Mats Harvest Period May * September Export Period June – November

Organic Struggle: The Movement for Sustainable Agriculture in the United States (Food, Health, and the Environment)

In the early 1970s, organic farming was an obscure agricultural practice, associated with the counterculture rather than commerce. Today, organic agriculture is a multi-billion dollar industry; organic food can be found on the shelves of every supermarket in America. In Organic Struggle, Brian Obach examines the evolution of the organic movement in the United States, a movement that seeks to transform our system of agriculture and how we think about food. Obach analyzes why the organic movement developed as it did and evaluates its achievements and shortcomings. He identifies how divergent interests within the diverse organic coalition created vulnerabilities for the movement. In particular, he examines the ideological divide between those he calls the “spreaders,” who welcome the wider market for organic food and want to work with both government and agribusiness, and the more purist “tillers,” who see organic practices as part of a broader social transformation that will take place outside existing institutions. Obach argues that the movement’s changing relationship with governmental institutions is crucial to understanding the trajectory of the organic sector. The government-run National Organic Program fostered dramatic growth and deep corporate penetration of the organic market. While many activists were disillusioned by changes in the organic industry that came with corporate and government involvement, Obach sees a failure in the essential market- based strategy adopted by the movement early in its history. He argues for a refocus on policy efforts that can reshape the agricultural system as a whole.
